Leadership Principle #4 - Legacy

What is legacy? What does that word actually mean?

Definition - Something that happened in the past. Something that is received and passed on to someone else.

This makes me think of a relay runner in track. Something happens before. They receive something and need to do their part. And then it continues on as they hand it to someone else.

This team and this program has been going on before you got here. It was shaped by the girls and coaches who came before you. And right now it's been handed to you and entrusted to you. You are shaping it and molding it with all your actions and achievements right now. And it will be passed on to a future generation.

I have a friend named Sara and she's in 4th grade. And she loves watching Avonworth Girls Soccer. She comes to all your games and even asked her parents if she could miss their family vacation to come to the game. She can't wait to be just like you and be a part of this team.

Right now you get to think and envision what you want to hand off to her and what she will receive in 7 years.

To quote Walt Witman, "What good oh me oh life? Answer: That you are here, that life exists, and identity. That powerful play goes on that you might contribute a verse."

The play of this team has been going on before you got here. It will continue after you leave. You have it right now in your hands and have an opportunity to contribute a verse to the play.

So be intentional. You will hand something off. You only have a short time of four years and you could hand off something really special.

Think about this in your life. The play of life has been going on and it will continue after you leave. What is the verse that you will contribute?

*One of the girls invited Sara to come on our bus to the State Semi Finals game. She was our ball girl for the game. That is a legacy she will never forget.
